The design brief was to fit out a vacant shop for use as the salon, capacity for 11 cutting stations. Extra wash basins as well as a sink equipped chemical mixing area screened from the public. The budget was minimal for the young couple stating out.
A full shop redesign was needed to fit everything in. With the shop having a glass corner entrance, traffic flow was not to interfere with the workstations, whilst ensuring concurrence with the flow of the village. The salon was to be fun, colourful and eye catching. Selection of materials chosen for the design took into consideration the cleaning of cut hair, chemical and water spillage of day-to-day whilst maintaining an appropriate and exciting aesthetics. Colors and styling chosen reflect, attract and attain the young and dynamic client base. Focal interest was incorporated into the work stations to maintain attention on the entrance of the salon presenting the bold topaz name, while not hindering workflow.
A central hub was designed to accommodate cutting stations. Picking up on the strong angular nature of the design, these cutting stations create a center feature incorporating a functional centerpiece with reception, product display and a welcoming entrance. Another important form emerged as a result of the hair washing area, a curve which protects the back corner acting as a screen for the sink mixing area; equally the curved wall frontage was an opportunity to express bold color and lighting with a minimalist look. Shampoo bottles and towels can be hidden from view thru the orange hopper opening.
The organization of shapes form opportunity for visual awareness across the whole shop though maintains personal booths for intimate client-staff interaction. Product display and ‘tools of the trade’ were incorporated into the shapes to keep the shop uncluttered and geometrically clean. Plumbing was hidden under a raised platform at the rear resulting in no changes to shop plumbing or structure.
